The Grade II-listed canopy at Whitley Bay Metro Station has been restored to its former glory through a major two-year refurbishment programme. The project is part of Nexus’ Metro Asset Renewal Programme and ensures the station remains a key gateway to North Tyneside’s coastline.
MHB Consultants was proud to be appointed as Lead Designer and Principal Designer on this important heritage scheme.

Our approach
Working closely with Nexus, Kier Group and heritage stakeholders, MHB led a design approach that:
- Respected the station’s historic status
- Improved safety and durability
- Minimal disruption to passengers and businesses
- Supported a practical and cost-effective construction strategy
The solution included:
- Restoring and strengthening the steelwork
- Installing 1,296 new panes of robust, modern glazing
- Reinstating glazing above the tracks
- Enhancing lighting, CCTV and public address systems
- Enabling the station to remain open throughout the works
Outcome
Nexus’ leadership team have publicly praised the project outcome, describing it as having restored the canopy to its former glory and ensuring the station will serve the community for many more decades.
This reflects well on the whole project team, and we are proud that MHB’s design work underpinned this success.
Following this strong outcome, MHB carried out the design work for Nexus on the restoration of the historic footbridge at Cullercoats Station.
