MHB were appointed by BAM Nuttall to provide initial tender and subsequent detailed design for new substation platforms at Crossaig North and Creag Dubh as part of SSEN’s reinforcement of the Argyll and Kintyre network. These sites are part of several within the Argyll projects portfolio and is intended to increase the transmission capacity within the Argyll region and will facilitate connection of several renewable energy schemes
The works included various civil, geotechnical, structural and environmental services including earthworks designs, specification and assessments for the substation platform, access roads and drainage, access tracks design to the substation, assessment of existing bridges assessments and designs for drainage for access tracks and external platform drainage, ground investigation design and reporting, review of extensive documents and data to create ground models for designs, soil and peat management activities, earthworks and rock mapping modelling and topographical surveys. The works was particularly challenging due the sites locations, topography, ground conditions and existing access.
The land quality team were involved the project management, design works, ground investigation, earthworks, drainage and peat management strategies throughout the project.
