Camps Viaduct Refurbishment

Location: Motherwell, Scotland

Client: Network Rail

Camps Viaduct is a 160-year-old steel structure that carries a live railway line over the River Clyde. As part of a significant investment by Network Rail, the structure was refurbished to extend its operational life by up to 25 years while maintaining safe, reliable service.

MHB Consultants was appointed to deliver a full package of civil and structural design services, including structural inspections, Level 2 assessments, condition-led repairs, strengthening, scour protection, and temporary works.

Our team applied a pragmatic and cost-effective approach, prioritising risk and responding to on-site constraints. We developed value-driven design solutions that could be delivered safely during short rail possessions.

The project was delivered with minimal disruption and received the Scottish Civil Engineering Award for ‘Best Refurbishment’.
