MHB was appointed by Geo-Structural Ltd to provide an Option Report for the Burghead Harbour Groyne. The purpose was to identify options for the repair or replacement of the sand retention groyne on Burghead Beach. The groyne was constructed with what appears to be mass concrete with fixing points along it to allow for the installation of wooden boards. Due to the condition of the groyne, there was an increase in the volume of sand is being washed into the entrance channel of the harbour restricting vessel access.
A ground investigation was undertaken to determine the ground conditions on site and undertake further inspection of the groyne. Due the tidal conditions working conditions were difficult. Given the potential Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) risk at the site because of its location, a magnetometer survey was undertaken at each location to clear the positions.
Based on the findings of this options report, a bulk/rubble mount groyne or narrow footprint/bulk Groyne were considered the best the solution for the replacement. The works was undertaken in Spring and Summer 2023.
