MHB was commissioned by Story Rail to design a new steel overbridge as part of the Midland Main Line enhancement project.
The new structure replaced an existing three-span masonry arch bridge and had to provide sufficient clearance for the introduction of overhead line equipment. Limited land at both ends of the bridge, combined with the need for greater vertical clearance, led to the development of a cambered, single-span structure. With no intermediate supports, the bridge sits on reinforced concrete bankseats constructed on each cutting slope.
The structure consists of two longitudinal main girders, with inverted T-section transverse ribs supporting a steel deck plate.
Delivery and Installation
Road access was restricted to one end of the site, while the narrow rural roads created further transport constraints. MHB worked closely with the principal contractor to develop a solution that allowed the bridge to be delivered in separate components and assembled within the site compound before installation.
The completed structure was then lifted into position in a single crane lift during a short railway blockade. This required close coordination with the contractor on the proposed methodology, along with careful detailing of the splice joints and temporary works to ensure the lift could be completed safely.
